Abstract

Both cis-and tvans-chlorodibenzoylethylenes react irreversibly with 95% ethanolic hydrogen chloride to give meso-dibenzoylethylene dichloride and the corresponding furan. However, when absolute ethanol is used the sole product is the 2-ethoxy-3-furanone.
