Abstract As a rule, tri-, tetra-and pentahaloarenes readily undergo ortho-lithiation when treated with amide-type bases. However, halogen migration occurs whenever the substrate contains three or more contiguous halogen atoms, provided that at least one of them is bromine or iodine.
