Abstract

Nitration of alkanes in the vapor-phase at temperatures above 350' yields each nitroalkane derived from the replacement of any hydrogen atom or alkyl group in the hydrocarbon.2 In reactions of the "atom-radical'' type it has been shown that the trifluoromethyl group has a marked deactivating effect on replacement of hy- drogen atoms in alpha positions; however, the effect of the trifluoromethyl group is greatly di- minished in beta position^.^ Since nitration reac- tions in the vapor- ...
