Abstract

Thermal maturation and biodegradation of crude oils and other bituminous substances in sediments result in the removal of normal steranes and triterpanes and enrich these materials in their rearranged and degraded counterparts.'These unusual hydrocarbon" biological markersn2 provide valuable information regarding source, maturation, and migration of crude but the lack of authentic samples limits their utility as biomarkers.
