Abstract

An alternate synthesis of the cyclic sulfoxide IV was attempted by way of the open-chain l- propyl-3-ethyl-5-(carboxymethanesulfinyl)-6-aminouracil (V), obtained by oxidation in alkaline solution of the corresponding mercaptoacetic acid IIb. The open-chain sulfoxide V was also rather unstable, decomposing rapidly on boiling with water into sulfur dioxide and l- propyl-3-ethyl-6-aminouracil.
