Abstract

Fig. 2.-2-Hydroxy-5-rnethylbiphenyl in 95% alcohol. carbinol is a straightforward cyclic dehydration, perhaps involving the chloride rather than the carbinol. The formation of the fluorenol from the pyran is more involved and is best interpreted as ring opening of the pyran to form the carbinol or its chloride followed by ring closure to the fluorenol. All our evidence is consistent with the view that the carbinol undergoes a rela-
