The synthesis of 1-phenylethynyl-8-bromonaphthalene haa permitted the synthesia of the 8- magnesio and-1ithio derivatives. The former reacts with water to generate phenylethynylnaphthalene and with HgCls to yield l-phenylethynyl-8- chloromercurinaphthalene, thus permitting an evaluation of mercury-acetylene interactions.
