Summary A new synthesis for hydrocarbons containing the 3,. l-benzphenanthrene nucleus is described. The method is based on a double ring closure of j3-benzohydrylglutaric acid to yield 2, 9-diketo-1, 2,-9, 10, 11, 12-hexahydr0-3, 4-benzphenanthrene.
