Abstract

Abstract Different types of tightly bound oxygen on carbon black have been distinguished by Grignard analysis. Carbonyl oxygen tends to be from 13 to 30% greater in amount than hydroxyl oxygen for all blacks. About 26% of the total content of tightly bound oxygen is accounted for by Grignard analysis. The greater part of the oxygen on the black is thus more or less chemically inert.
