A central intermediate in our recent total synthesis of coriolin was the enedione 3.'~~ As a result of investigations which were directed toward the total synthesis and through follow-up studie~,~?~ we have developed the capability to introduce carbon functinality at either ethylenic carbon of enedione 1.
