A new series of water-soluble monoethers of hydroquinone has been prepared including the hydroquinone ethers of lactic acid, of b-hydroxypropionic acid, of CY-and y-hydroxybutyric acid, the hydroquinone acetal of ethyl glyoxalate, and some of their derivatives. Four methods of synthesis have been adapted to the specific conditions encountered.
