Method B. 6-Bromo-l-(chloromethyl)-2-methoxynaphthalene (4)(5.7 g, 0.02 mol) was dissolved in 125 mL of warm ethyl acetate. Triethylamine (5 mL) and 5% Pd/C (500 mg) were added, and the mixture was hydrogenated as in method A. The reaction was worked up as above and the white crystals of 8 (3.3 g, 96%); mp 35-7" C, were identical by IR and NMR with the product prepared by method A.
