Abstract

Trimesityliridium (III),(mes) 3Ir, activates O2 to form oxotrimesityliridium (V),(mes) 3Ir O, in a reaction that is second order in iridium and first order in molecular oxygen. This dioxygen activation can be combined with atom transfer from (mes) 3Ir O to PPh3 (k ox= 3.95 M-1 s-1) to allow efficient catalytic air oxidation of triphenylphosphine at room temperature.
