Abstract

The reaction rate is not affected by the nature of the onium salt, provided it is insoluble in the aqueous phase (hexadecyltributylphosphonium bromide, tetraoctylammonium bromide, trioctylmethylammonium chloride). Tetrabutylammonium bromide and triethylbenzylammonium chloride, on the contrary, show a very low catalytic activity, due to their appreciable solubility in water.
