Abstract

In our first attempt, ethyl acetoxyacetate (111; R= R'= R'= H) was treated with metallic sodium without solvent: there was little if any reaction at room temperature, but vigorous reaction at about 120". The sodium dissolved completely, a brown solid (presumably a sodio-derivative)
