Abstract: Two new inhibitors, bis (4-nitrophenyl) propylphosphonate (NPN) and methyl 4- nitrophenyl propylphosphonate (MPN), react irreversibly with the serine proteases bovine pancreatic a-chymotrypsin (EC 3.4. 21. l), porcine pancreatic elastase (EC 3.4. 21.11), and subtilisin (EC 3.4. 21.3)(NPN also reacts with bovine pancreatic trypsin (EC 3.4. 21.4)) to liberate 1 mol of 4-nitrophenol with production of an inactive enzyme.
