Marrow adipose tissue (MAT) is a specialized adipose tissue with endocrine function found in bone marrow. In this issue ofCell Stem Cell, Ambrosi et al. (2017) identify a stem cell population in the bone marrow that can give rise to both osteogenic and adipogenic MAT precursors and is regulated by diet and aging and affects bone functionality.
