Abstract During our approach to the total synthesis of pinguisone, 1 we required a convenient method for preparing 2, 3, 4-cyclopent-2-enone (I), to be tested as a dienophile in a Diels Alder reaction. Known methods2 are not fully satisfactory either for their poor yields or because the precursors are not easily available.
