A general approach to tertiary α-aminoorganolithium reagents by reductive lithiation of α- aminonitriles has been developed. This class of organolithium nucleophiles reacts efficiently with carbonyl electrophiles or in intramolecular cyclizations with tethered phosphate leaving groups.
