Abstract

Discussion 5-Methyl-2-thenoic acid has been nitrated by RinkesJ2 using acetic anhydride and fuming nitric acid at-5 to-loo, to give as the main product (sic) 4-nitro-5-methyl-2-thenoic acid and small quantities of 5-nitro-2-methylthiophene and 3, 5-dinitro-2-methylthiophene. This reaction has been repeated in this work using red fuming nitric acid (trial I), and pure, colorless nitric acid (trial 11), each with acetic anhydride at-5 to-10'. The results are given ...
