Abstract

The direct esterification of alkyl halides using stoichiometric amounts of sodium, mercury, and silver carboxylates is examined. Treatment of unhindered primary alkyl iodides and bromides, as well as allyl and benzyl chloride, bromide, and iodide, with sodium acetate in HMPA at room temperature provides excellent yields of the corresponding esters.
