Abstract

The metalating properties of potassium-graphite (CaK) toward imines 1 and 2, 4, 4, 6- tetramethyl-5, 6-dihydro-1, 3-oxazine (4) are described. Alkylation of the potassium salts 2 and 5 with a variety of alkyl halides affords in good yields the corresponding carbonyl compounds 3 and 6. The Wurtz coupling of alkyl halides is a side reaction in tetrahydrofuran; it can be suppressed using hexane as solvent, but in this case the yield of alkylated imine ...
